About Gong
Gong’s story is as fantastical and sprawling as their music, born from the fertile imagination of Australian musician Daevid Allen in the late 1960s. Emerging from the post-psychedelic haze of Canterbury and French scenes, Gong quickly established themselves as unique architects of what would become known as space rock and progressive rock. Their early work, especially the seminal “Radio Gnome Invisible” trilogy (Flying Teapot, Angel’s Egg, You), introduced listeners to a bizarre, humorous, and deeply philosophical universe populated by Pot Head Pixies, Octave Doctors, and the Planet Gong itself. Their sound is characterised by glissando guitar, ethereal vocals, intricate jazz-fusion rhythms, and swirling, hypnotic synthesiser textures.
Though Daevid Allen sadly passed away in 2015, he left the band with his blessing to continue their cosmic journey. The current incarnation of Gong, featuring Kavus Torabi (guitar, vocals), Fabio Golfetti (guitar), Dave Sturt (bass), Cheb Nettles (drums), and Ian East (saxophone, flute), has not only honoured Allen’s legacy but boldly propelled the band into a new era. They’ve released critically acclaimed albums like The Universe Also Collapses and Unending Ascending, showcasing their continued commitment to adventurous, boundary-pushing music. This lineup masterfully blends the band’s psychedelic heritage with fresh, contemporary progressive rock sensibilities, ensuring that Gong remains a vital and evolving force in the music world.
