About Royal Arena: Layout, History & Architecture

Opened in February 2017, Royal Arena represents a significant addition to Copenhagen's contemporary architectural landscape. Designed by 3XN in collaboration with HKS and Arup, the structure embodies a distinct Nordic brutalist aesthetic, characterized by its robust, geometric concrete facade and an exterior clad in light oak fins. This modern design provides a striking visual presence within the Ørestad district.

The hall is highly versatile, capable of accommodating up to 17,000 spectators for concerts and 13,000 for sporting events. Its configuration typically features a large central floor area that can be set for standing crowds or extensive seating, surrounded by multiple tiers of fixed seating. Sightlines from most sections are generally unobstructed, a benefit of its purpose-built modern design. However, as with most large-scale concrete arenas, the natural acoustics of the cavernous space present challenges for unamplified performances; sound reinforcement via a sophisticated PA system is therefore crucial and extensively utilized to deliver acceptable audio quality for music events. The primary function of the space is to host spectacles of scale, where visual impact and crowd capacity often take precedence over acoustic intimacy.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entering Royal Arena typically involves a streamlined process facilitated by multiple entry points, though queues can form rapidly for popular events. Once inside, attendees find themselves in spacious, modern foyers equipped with various bars and refreshment stands, designed to handle large volumes of people efficiently. For concerts, the experience varies significantly between the standing pit, which offers direct proximity and high energy, and the tiered seating sections, which provide elevated, clear sightlines at the expense of immediacy. The overall atmosphere is that of a large-scale, professionally managed venue, geared towards major international acts and sporting events. With 39 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from €59.36. The next confirmed event on the calendar is KATSEYE on 17th September 2026.

Travel & Arrival Logistics

🚆

Rail & Mainline Connections

The nearest rail hub is Ørestad Station, served by Metro Line M1 and regional train services. From Ørestad Station, the arena is a 7-minute walk south-east along Ørestads Boulevard, turning onto Hannemanns Allé.

🚌

Bus & Local Transit

Several local bus routes serve the Ørestad district. Key services include bus routes 118 and 500S, with stops conveniently located near Ørestad Station and along Hannemanns Allé, offering connections to broader Copenhagen public transit networks.

🚗

Parking & Vehicle Access

On-site underground parking is available at P-hus Royal Arena, though spaces are limited and can incur significant fees, especially during major events. Patrons should consider pre-booking parking online to guarantee a spot and avoid congestion. Additional parking options can be found at the nearby Field's shopping centre, located north-west of the arena, accessible via a 12-minute walk.

🚶

Entry, Queues & Security

Main entrances are located on multiple sides of the arena, typically opening 60-90 minutes before the advertised show start. All patrons should expect standard security procedures, including bag searches. Arriving 30-45 minutes before doors open is advisable for those seeking prime standing positions or wishing to navigate the foyer amenities ahead of peak crowd density.
