About AFAS Live: Layout, History & Architecture
AFAS Live, originally opened in 2001 as the Heineken Music Hall, was conceived by Benthem Crouwel Architects as a dedicated auditorium for amplified music. Its design prioritizes functionality and acoustic isolation, employing a "box-in-box" construction to minimize external noise intrusion and manage internal reverberation effectively. The main hall, known as the Black Box, has a flexible capacity of 6,000 for standing configurations or 5,500 with a tiered seating arrangement.
The architectural profile is distinctly modernist and pragmatic, characterized by its robust, monolithic exterior and a spacious, often industrial-feeling interior. Within the Black Box, the ground floor offers a large, unobstructed standing area directly in front of the stage. Above this, a single, steeply raked balcony provides elevated views, generally ensuring clear sightlines across the performance space, though floor-level views can become challenging in densely packed crowds. A smaller hall, the Beat Box, offers an intimate setting for up to 700 attendees.
Acoustically, the hall is engineered for the demands of amplified live performances.
