About Allianz Field: Layout, History & Architecture
Constructed in 2019, Allianz Field is a purpose-built soccer stadium located in Saint Paul's Midway district. Designed by Populous, its distinctive architectural style features a permeable, translucent PTFE fabric "skin" that wraps the stadium bowl, allowing for ambient light to filter through and creating a glowing effect at night. This curvilinear form eschews traditional brutalist stadium aesthetics for a more contemporary, dynamic presence.
The ground accommodates 19,400 spectators across multiple seating tiers, specifically engineered for optimal sightlines for soccer. The steepest rake is found in the "Wonderwall," the safe-standing general admission section behind the south goal, which is designed to maximize supporter energy and generate significant localized crowd noise. Other seating areas offer clear, unobstructed views of the pitch.
As an open-air stadium, the acoustic environment is primarily shaped by the crowd and the comprehensive public address system. While not engineered for the nuanced sound projection of a concert hall, the design effectively captures and amplifies the roar of the supporters, contributing to a vibrant match-day atmosphere. Sound dissipation is natural in an outdoor setting, with the PA system providing necessary reinforcement for announcements and music.
