About Auditorio Kursaal: Layout, History & Architecture

Completed in 1999 and designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rafael Moneo, the Auditorio Kursaal is an iconic modernist structure defined by its two translucent glass "cubes," intended to resemble two grounded rocks (krusai) at the mouth of the Urumea River. This architectural choice gives the building a striking presence on the Donostia / San Sebastián waterfront. The complex primarily houses two main performance spaces: the Auditorio Kursaal, with a capacity of 1,806 seats, and the Sala de Cámara, a smaller chamber hall accommodating 600.

The main auditorium features a deeply tiered, horseshoe-shaped seating arrangement, ensuring clear sightlines throughout without any structural obstructions. This design prioritizes an unobstructed visual connection to the stage for all patrons. Acoustically, the hall was engineered by Arup Acoustics with a primary focus on clarity and natural resonance for unamplified performances, particularly classical music and congresses. For amplified contemporary concerts, the expansive concrete and glass surfaces necessitate significant reliance on finely tuned PA systems to manage reverberation and achieve optimal sound reinforcement across the large volume of the space. While well-suited for its core purpose, the natural acoustic profile requires careful calibration for diverse musical genres.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entering the Kursaal, patrons are greeted by spacious, minimalist foyers that contribute to an ordered ingress flow. Foyer bars are available, typically situated on various levels, providing ample space for pre-show and interval refreshments without feeling overly congested. Given the primary design of the main auditorium and chamber hall as seated venues, the audience experience focuses on comfortable, tiered seating rather than dense standing pits. Sightlines from most seats in the Auditorio Kursaal are excellent, offering clear views of the stage. The atmosphere adapts distinctly to the programmed event, ranging from the focused quiet of a classical concert to the engaged energy of a contemporary music performance, all within a well-maintained and acoustically considered environment. With 7 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from €105.55. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Miguel Ríos Donostia on 11th October 2026.

Travel & Arrival Logistics

🚆

Rail & Mainline Connections

The nearest mainline station is Donostia-San Sebastián (Estación del Norte). From the station, which is situated inland, the venue is an approximately 15-minute walk. Head northwest along Paseo de Francia until you reach Puente de Santa Catalina or Puente de Zurriola. Cross either bridge into the Gros district, then proceed east along Avenida de la Zurriola or Paseo de la República Argentina, following the riverfront/beachfront towards the Kursaal complex, which faces the water.

🚌

Bus & Local Transit

Numerous DBUS (Donostia Bus) routes serve the Gros district and the immediate vicinity of the venue. Key routes include lines 8, 17, 25, 26, 28, and 37. Look for stops named "Zurriola," "Kursaal," or "Gros," which are all within a short walk of the main entrances.

🚗

Parking & Vehicle Access

The most convenient option is Parking Kursaal, located directly beneath the venue. Additional underground parking facilities within a 10-minute walk include Parking Txofre and Parking Okendo. Expect standard city centre parking fees. During peak event times, these car parks can experience significant congestion, and advance booking or arrival well in advance is highly recommended.

🚶

Entry, Queues & Security

The main entrances to the Auditorio Kursaal face the Zurriola beach and the mouth of the Urumea River. Queue arrangements are typically well-organized, flowing from the exterior plazas into the expansive foyers. Standard bag search policies are in effect for all events. To ensure a relaxed entry and allow time for finding your seat or refreshments, it is advisable to arrive 30-45 minutes before the scheduled start time.
