About Auditorio Kursaal: Layout, History & Architecture
Completed in 1999, the Auditorio Kursaal is a prominent example of contemporary architecture in Donostia, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rafael Moneo. Its distinctive profile, comprising two large translucent glass cubes, sits at the mouth of the Urumea River where it meets the Bay of Biscay. The primary performance space is the Auditorio, a tiered hall seating approximately 1,800 attendees. This main hall is configured with fixed, raked seating, providing generally clear sightlines towards the stage across its wide array of rows and levels.
In addition to the main Auditorio, the complex includes the Sala de Cámara, a smaller, more intimate chamber hall accommodating around 600 individuals, also with fixed seating. Both spaces are constructed with modern materials, including extensive concrete and glass, characteristic of their era. Acoustically, the Auditorio was conceived for natural sound, particularly for classical and orchestral performances, where its design facilitates a generally clear and resonant sound profile. However, for amplified concerts and contemporary events, the expansive volume of the space means that sound clarity and impact are heavily reliant on the installed PA system.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Entering the Auditorio Kursaal typically involves passing through the main doors facing Zurriola Beach, leading into a spacious, multi-level foyer area that can accommodate significant crowds without feeling overly congested. Bars are generally available on various levels, offering refreshments before performances and during intervals. Audiences proceed to their assigned seating in the tiered Auditorio. Seated performances offer good visibility due to the raked floor, though the wide layout means some side seats can have an oblique view of the stage depending on the stage setup. With 6 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £130.88. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Miguel Ríos on 11th October 2026. Crowd atmosphere varies significantly with the genre of event, from the focused quiet of a classical concert to the engaged energy of a contemporary music act.
