About Brooklyn Paramount: Layout, History & Architecture

Originally opening its doors in 1928, Brooklyn Paramount debuted as the world's first movie palace purpose-built for talkies, a pioneering example of Art Deco design by the architectural firm Rapp and Rapp. Following a long tenure within the Long Island University Brooklyn campus, the space underwent extensive renovation, reopening in 2024 as a dedicated live music venue. The hall maintains its opulent Art Deco aesthetic, featuring a proscenium arch, ornate ceiling details, and a grand scale designed for spectacle. With a capacity of approximately 2,700 to 3,000 patrons for live events, the auditorium primarily offers a spacious flat standing floor in the orchestra pit area, complemented by a mezzanine and a grand tiered balcony for seated viewing.

Sightlines from the main standing floor are generally unobstructed towards the stage, offering direct views. The balcony seating provides elevated perspectives, though some positions towards the extreme sides or under the overhang may experience minor stage cuts. Acoustically, the venue’s original design as a lavish movie palace provides a naturally resonant and expansive sound profile. While not a purpose-built acoustic concert hall, the recent renovations have integrated a robust, contemporary sound reinforcement system that expertly shapes the audio experience, ensuring clarity and power across the space. The live sound has a distinct character, informed by the building's historical architecture.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entry to Brooklyn Paramount is typically managed via the main entrance on University Place, with queueing organized along the street. Patrons proceed through standard bag checks and metal detection. Inside, the grand foyer retains much of its original character, offering multiple bar areas across various levels, designed to mitigate congestion before and between performances. The standing pit area on the main floor allows for an energetic and intimate experience directly in front of the stage, conducive to active crowd engagement. For those preferring a more relaxed view, the tiered balcony seating provides a clear, elevated perspective of the stage and the overall performance, allowing attendees to take in the architectural grandeur.

The atmosphere shifts dynamically with each act, from high-energy rock shows to more contemplative performances. With 85 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from $27.01. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Social Distortion on 11th September 2026.

Travel & Arrival Logistics

🚆

Rail & Mainline Connections

The venue is well-served by the New York City Subway. The DeKalb Avenue station (B, Q, R trains) is a 6-minute walk west down DeKalb Avenue, then south onto Flatbush Avenue Extension. Alternatively, the Nevins Street station (2, 3, 4, 5 trains) is an 8-minute walk, proceeding north on Flatbush Avenue to DeKalb Avenue, then turning left onto University Place.

🚌

Bus & Local Transit

Numerous MTA bus routes serve Downtown Brooklyn. Key stops are located along Flatbush Avenue Extension, DeKalb Avenue, and Ashland Place, all within a 5-to-10-minute walk of the venue. Notable routes include the B25, B26, B38, B41, B45, B52, B54, B67, and B69, providing extensive connections across Brooklyn and to Manhattan.

🚗

Parking & Vehicle Access

On-street parking is severely limited in Downtown Brooklyn. Several paid parking garages are available within a 10-minute radius. These include the SP+ Parking garage at 170 Ashland Place and the LAZ Parking garage at 300 Ashland Place. Fees vary significantly based on event demand and duration; advance booking online is highly recommended to secure a spot and potentially reduce cost. Expect elevated congestion immediately before and after events.

🚶

Entry, Queues & Security

The primary entrance is located at 1 University Place. Queue lines form along University Place and may extend onto DeKalb Avenue for high-capacity events. All attendees are subject to bag searches and walk-through metal detection upon entry. To ensure ample time for security checks, coat check if available, and to navigate to desired viewing areas, patrons are advised to arrive 30-45 minutes before the advertised show start time. Specific bag size restrictions are enforced and are typically detailed on the venue’s official website.
