About Broward Center for the Performing Arts - Au Rene Theater: Layout, History & Architecture
Opened in 1991, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts was designed by Benjamin Thompson & Associates, embodying a postmodern architectural style with its distinctive curving glass facades overlooking the New River. The Au-Rene Theater is the largest venue within the complex, configured as a classic proscenium arch auditorium. It accommodates approximately 2,700 patrons across three distinct tiers: the orchestra level, mezzanine, and upper balcony.
The seating arrangement throughout the hall is fixed and raked, designed to provide clear sightlines towards the stage for the majority of patrons. While lower-level seats offer direct proximity, the upper balcony sections, while providing a comprehensive overview of the stage, do place viewers at a significant distance from the performance. Acoustically, the space was primarily engineered for live, unamplified performances such as symphony orchestras, opera, and traditional theater. For amplified concerts or events relying on extensive sound reinforcement, the venue's large volume necessitates a heavy reliance on its installed PA system, which can result in a less natural or intimate acoustic profile compared to purpose-built contemporary music venues.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Ingress to the Au-Rene Theater typically occurs through the primary entrance situated on the building's south side, directly overlooking the New River. Within the building, patrons can access multiple foyer spaces across various levels, each equipped with bars and concession stands. As a seated venue, the atmosphere is generally attentive and focused on the stage, characteristic of performing arts events, with no standing pit area available. Tickets are allocated to specific seat numbers, ensuring a structured viewing experience.
With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
