About Camden Town Various Venues: Layout, History & Architecture

Originally opening its doors in 1900 as The Camden Theatre, the venue now known as KOKO stands as a significant Edwardian Baroque structure within Camden Town. Designed by the architect W. G. R. Sprague, the building initially served as a prestigious theatre, later transitioning into a cinema and then a renowned music venue, Camden Palace. Following extensive refurbishment and restoration efforts after a significant fire, it reopened with its ornate historical features meticulously preserved and modernised. The main auditorium boasts a substantial flat standing floor, flanked by multiple tiered balconies and a distinctive mezzanine level, providing diverse viewing perspectives.

With a capacity of approximately 1,500, the hall's internal architecture, characterised by its domed ceiling and ornate plasterwork, creates a distinctive acoustic environment. While a state-of-the-art sound system is critical for contemporary performances, the inherent reverberation properties of such a grand, multi-tiered space mean that sound dispersal is unique, and not always clinically precise like a purpose-built acoustic chamber. Sightlines from the main floor are generally unobstructed, though patrons on the upper balconies might find some peripheral or side-stage views partially obscured by the building's structural pillars, typical of a theatre of this vintage.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entering the venue primarily via its main doors on Camden High Street, visitors are immediately met with the building's grand scale. The multi-level layout efficiently distributes foot traffic, leading to numerous bars and lounge areas, including the meticulously restored main dome bar. The standing pit on the ground floor can become densely packed during high-demand performances, offering direct proximity to the stage. For those preferring a more elevated view, the various balcony levels provide good sightlines over the main floor, albeit with varying degrees of intimacy. The atmosphere is consistently vibrant, driven by the diverse programming across genres. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
