Completed in 1974, the Cardiff University Students Union building stands as a robust example of Brutalist architecture, characterised by its exposed concrete façades and assertive geometric massing. Its primary performance space, often referred to as Y Plas or The Great Hall, offers a substantial capacity typically accommodating between 1,500 and 2,000 standing patrons for live events. The hall is configured with a large, flat standing floor directly facing a raised stage, providing a communal, open environment for audiences.
Sightlines across the main floor are generally clear, though can become challenging for those positioned further back in a densely packed crowd. Structural columns inherent to the Brutalist design may present minor visual obstructions from certain extreme angles at the periphery of the hall. Acoustically, the concrete shell of the space inherently possesses a live, somewhat reverberant character. This necessitates and relies heavily on the venue's modern, integrated PA system to deliver clarity and precise low-end projection, essential for contemporary amplified performances.
