About Casa Da Música, Sala Suggia: Layout, History & Architecture

Casa Da Música, designed by Rem Koolhaas's Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), opened its doors in 2005, a striking addition to Porto's urban fabric. The building's deconstructivist architecture, characterized by its faceted, irregular geometry and exposed concrete, immediately sets it apart. Sala Suggia, the main concert hall, is a meticulously crafted space with a capacity of 1,238. Its internal configuration deviates from a symmetrical shoebox design, featuring non-parallel walls and varied surfaces, including large corrugated glass panels, to achieve specific acoustic properties.

The hall is primarily a seated venue, with an orchestra level and multiple tiered balconies that ensure excellent sightlines from most positions. The design prioritises acoustic performance, which was developed in collaboration with Level Acoustics & Vibration. Materials like the distinct plywood lining and the innovative glass walls are not merely aesthetic but are integral to the sound diffusion and reflection within the space. Unlike many modernist concrete structures that suffer from inherent reverberation, Sala Suggia benefits from an advanced acoustic design that provides clarity and presence for both unamplified classical performances and amplified contemporary music, with variable panels allowing for adaptable acoustic profiles.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Upon arrival, guests typically enter through the main doors facing Rotunda da Boavista, leading into a spacious, multi-level foyer that serves as a central circulation hub. The journey to Sala Suggia involves traversing through these visually dynamic public spaces. The venue features several well-appointed foyer bars and a restaurant, providing ample options for refreshments before performances or during intermissions. Seating in Sala Suggia is structured for optimal viewing and listening, eliminating a standing pit in favour of an attentive, seated audience experience. The atmosphere is generally one of focused appreciation, reflecting the nature of the diverse programming, which spans classical, jazz, and contemporary genres. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
