Opened in October 2017, Conjunto Santander de Artes Escénicas, and specifically the Sala Plácido Domingo, represents a significant addition to Mexico's performing arts infrastructure. Designed by architect José de Arimatea Moyao as the centerpiece of the University of Guadalajara's Cultural Center complex, the architecture is resolutely modernist, characterized by clean lines, expansive concrete surfaces, and significant glass elements that allow natural light into its public spaces. While not an echo chamber, the robust, concrete-framed structure provides a solid acoustic envelope, allowing for considerable presence without over-reverberation, suitable for its diverse programming demands.
