About E-Werk: Layout, History & Architecture

E-Werk Erlangen, located at Fuchsenwiese 1, occupies the converted premises of a former municipal electricity substation. Originally constructed in the early 20th century, the building's industrial heritage is evident in its robust brickwork and functional design, aspects largely retained through its transformation into a multi-venue cultural center, commencing operations in 1992. The main auditorium, known as the Gongsaal, offers a largely flat-floor standing configuration with a raised stage, accommodating approximately 1,200 patrons for standing-room events or around 400 when partially seated. Sightlines in the Gongsaal are generally unobstructed from most positions on the main floor, though they can become challenged by crowd density at peak capacity towards the rear.

Beneath the main hall, the Kellerbühne provides a more intimate basement setting for smaller performances, characterized by lower ceilings and direct proximity to the stage, typically holding around 200-300 attendees. Additionally, a Clubraum and various ancillary spaces offer further flexibility. Acoustically, the Gongsaal, with its industrial dimensions and hard surfaces, presents a live, somewhat reverberant environment. Sound reinforcement is therefore critical, with modern PA systems engineered to manage the space's inherent sonic characteristics, delivering a clear but often direct sound profile rather than a naturally warm or diffuse acoustic. The Kellerbühne, due to its size and construction, offers a tighter, more immediate sound.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entry to E-Werk typically involves queuing at the main entrance facing Fuchsenwiese, followed by standard security checks. Once inside, multiple foyer bars are available, providing refreshments before and during events. In the Gongsaal, the standing pit cultivates an energetic atmosphere, with crowd density increasing significantly closer to the stage. For events utilizing partial seating, elevated positions offer clearer sightlines over the main floor, albeit at a greater distance from the performance. The Kellerbühne, conversely, fosters a highly immersive and immediate experience due to its confined dimensions and close artist-audience proximity. With 3 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £122.44. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Artemas Köln on 15th November 2026.
