Opened in 2013, Estadio San Mamés stands as a contemporary architectural statement on the south bank of Bilbao's Estuary. Designed by César Azkarate of IDOM, the stadium replaced its venerable predecessor, blending a modern steel and glass facade with a distinctive scale-like exterior. With a capacity of approximately 53,331 for football matches, the arena reconfigures for major live music events, utilizing the central pitch as a standing area while maintaining tiered seating across its four stands.

The layout is primarily designed for sporting events, featuring multiple levels of seating that encircle the pitch. Sightlines are generally unobstructed from most tiered positions, though upper levels provide a distant, panoramic view of the stage. For concerts, the central standing area offers direct proximity to performers. Acoustically, as a large, open-air concrete and steel structure, the space is expansive and prone to significant reverberation. Musical fidelity relies heavily on a powerful, well-calibrated PA system to project sound across the vast area and mitigate echoes, rather than benefiting from natural acoustic warmth or intimacy.

Entering San Mamés for a live performance involves navigating multiple perimeter gates, each equipped for bag searches and security checks. Inside, broad concourses provide access to numerous concession stands and bars. For concerts, the atmosphere typically oscillates between the dense, energetic crowd on the standing pitch and the more spacious, overview experience from the tiered seating.
