About Gas Works Park: Layout, History & Architecture
Gas Works Park, inaugurated in 1975, represents a seminal example of post-industrial landscape architecture, transforming the former Seattle Gas Light Company gasification plant into a public green space. Designed by Richard Haag Associates, the 19.1-acre park masterfully integrates the decaying industrial structures—including the exhauster-compressor building, scrubber, and retort house—into its fabric, celebrating their forms rather than erasing them. The architectural style can be best described as industrial archaeology, where elements like pipes and machinery are preserved and often painted in vibrant hues, creating a unique, almost sculptural landscape. The space is primarily open-air, featuring expansive grassy slopes, notably the "Kite Hill" which offers panoramic views across Lake Union towards the Seattle skyline.
The park offers no enclosed "rooms" or traditional auditorium configurations. Instead, performances are staged on temporary platforms, utilizing the park's natural topography for crowd viewing. The park entrance will be on your left.
