About GelreDome: Layout, History & Architecture

GelreDome, inaugurated in 1998, stands as a distinctive example of late 20th-century stadium architecture, renowned for its innovative engineering. It was among the first stadiums globally to feature a fully retractable roof and a movable pitch, which can be slid out of the main structure to allow natural light and air for grass maintenance or to facilitate rapid conversion for diverse events. This capability transforms the multi-purpose space from an open-air football arena into a climate-controlled indoor venue for concerts, conventions, and motorsports.

With a maximum concert capacity reaching approximately 41,000, the hall offers a vast configuration. Audiences are accommodated on a flat standing floor at pitch level, augmented by two main tiers of seating that encircle the space, ascending significantly towards the rear. Sightlines from the upper tiers, while generally unobstructed, place attendees at a considerable distance from the stage during music performances. The proximity to the performance area diminishes quickly from the front of the standing pit, due to the sheer scale of the auditorium.

Acoustically, as a large, enclosed concrete stadium, the space presents inherent challenges. The natural reverberation is significant, meaning that sonic clarity for musical acts relies heavily on sophisticated and powerful PA systems. While the closed roof provides a controlled environment, the architecture dictates that sound quality is largely a product of robust reinforcement rather than natural resonance or intimate acoustic design.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Ingress for major events at GelreDome is managed through multiple designated entry points, often segmented by ticket type to streamline crowd flow. Once inside, expansive foyer areas are equipped with numerous bars and concession stands, designed for high-volume service. For concerts, the standing pit on the main floor can become very dense, offering the most direct, albeit sometimes crowded, experience of the performance. Seated sections, particularly in the upper tiers, provide clear but distant views of the stage. The overall atmosphere typically reflects the energy of large-scale stadium events, driven by the collective anticipation of a substantial crowd. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
