The current Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, inaugurated in 1981, stands on Augustusplatz in Leipzig, Germany. This modern concert hall, designed by Rudolf Skoda, Eberhard Göschel, and Horst Krüger, represents a significant architectural statement with its functionalist design and expansive public spaces. The building houses two primary performance areas: the Großer Saal (Great Hall) and the Kleiner Saal (Small Hall).
The Großer Saal, with a capacity of approximately 1900, employs a 'vineyard' style configuration, where tiered seating sections rise around the central stage from multiple angles.
