While its origins trace back to 1899, the current configuration largely stems from significant redevelopment following the 1971 Ibrox disaster. The stadium was progressively rebuilt through the 1970s and early 1980s, culminating in an all-seater bowl with a current capacity of approximately 50,817. Architecturally, it is a functional and robust example of post-war stadium design, primarily constructed from concrete and steel, with the exception of the iconic, red-brick Main Stand (originally 1928, extensively renovated), which retains some traditional character.

The hall's layout is optimised for football, featuring four distinct, tiered stands surrounding the pitch. For concert events, a temporary stage is typically erected at one end of the pitch, converting the field into a standing area, with the lower and middle tiers of the stands providing seated views. Sightlines from the upper tiers can be distant, particularly for stage performances, given the stadium's primary purpose and scale. Acoustically, as a vast, open-air concrete structure, the space relies heavily on sophisticated, temporary PA systems for sound reinforcement during live music events. Sound dispersion and reverberation can be notable, and the overall audio quality is highly dependent on system design and atmospheric conditions rather than inherent architectural properties.
