Opened in 1929 as a 'super cinema' under the Gaumont banner, the Ipswich Regent Theatre blends Art Deco flourishes with a more classical façade. The venue, designed by E. R. Woolnough, initially catered to both film screenings and live variety performances. The main auditorium features a proscenium arch stage, a raked stalls area that can be configured for either full seating or partial standing, and a deep, tiered circle balcony above. With a capacity of approximately 1551 patrons, the hall maintains much of its original grandeur.
Sightlines are generally clear from most positions, though the deep overhang of the circle can partially obscure the very top of the stage from the rear rows of the stalls. Acoustically, the large volume of the space, with its high ceilings and decorative plasterwork, means unamplified sound can dissipate quickly.
