About Ironworks: Layout, History & Architecture
Originally constructed in 1908 as the central foundry for the Surrey Docks, Ironworks operated as a heavy engineering facility until its closure in 1997. The building underwent a comprehensive architectural conversion and re-opened as a live music venue in 2002. The design thoughtfully preserves much of its Edwardian industrial character, featuring robust exposed brickwork, original structural steel girders, and expansive, arched windows along its waterfront façade. The main auditorium is a large, rectangular space with a capacity for 1,500 standing patrons on a flat concrete floor. Above, a single, tiered balcony provides seating for an additional 300, offering clear, elevated views of the stage.
The inherent architectural materials — a combination of hard brick, steel, and concrete — contribute to a naturally 'live' and somewhat reflective acoustic profile within the main hall. While extensive acoustic panelling has been integrated during the refurbishment, the space’s original volume and surfaces mean that sound clarity relies heavily on the quality and precise tuning of the installed PA system. Lower frequencies can be particularly resonant in the standing pit, necessitating careful system management to prevent muddiness. From the balcony, listening conditions are generally more controlled, though reflections from the rear wall can be noticeable. Sightlines from the standing floor are largely unobstructed, while the balcony offers excellent elevated perspectives, with only two slender support pillars flanking the stage marginally impacting a small number of perimeter seats.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Patron ingress is managed via the main entrance on Greenland Passage, leading into a compact foyer area. Here, two functional bars provide refreshments before guests proceed into the main performance area. The standing pit directly in front of the stage offers an energetic, high-density experience, with direct proximity to performers. For those preferring a more relaxed vantage, the tiered balcony provides comfortable seating and an encompassing view of the stage and the vibrant crowd below. The atmosphere typically oscillates between focused appreciation for performance and enthusiastic communal energy, depending on the artist.
With 2 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £68. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Eric Prydz on 10th October 2026.
Travel & Arrival Logistics
Rail & Mainline Connections
The nearest mainline and Underground station is Canada Water (Jubilee Line and London Overground). From the station, Ironworks is a 15-minute walk south-east. Exit the station onto Surrey Quays Road, continue south-east until you reach Greenland Dock, then turn left onto Greenland Passage, where the venue entrance is located facing the water.
Bus & Local Transit
Several Transport for London bus routes serve Canada Water Bus Station, a 12-minute walk north-west from Ironworks. Key routes include the 1 (to Tottenham Court Road), 199 (to Lewisham), N1 (night bus to Tottenham Court Road), and N199 (night bus to Lewisham). There are no direct coach links to the immediate venue vicinity; long-distance coaches typically terminate at Victoria Coach Station, requiring further Underground or bus transfer.
Parking & Vehicle Access
The Surrey Quays Shopping Centre Multi-Storey Car Park, located approximately a 10-minute walk west of the venue via Surrey Quays Road, is the most practical option. Hourly fees apply, and spaces can become scarce on event nights. Advance online booking is strongly advised, particularly for evening performances, to secure a spot and potentially mitigate congestion upon arrival.
Entry, Queues & Security
The main entrance is situated directly on Greenland Passage, facing Greenland Dock. Queueing arrangements are typically managed on the pavement directly outside the venue. Standard bag search policies are in effect, and patrons should anticipate security screening upon entry. It is generally recommended to arrive 30-45 minutes before the advertised stage times to allow for security checks and to reach your desired viewing position before the performance commences.
