Junkyard, situated within Dortmund's revitalised Hafen district, is less a traditional venue and more an evolved industrial complex, transformed into an event space from approximately 2016-2017. Its architectural language is raw and uncompromising, drawing heavily from its post-industrial heritage. The aesthetic is a deliberate embrace of brutalist and repurposed design, featuring exposed concrete, corrugated metal, and robust steel frameworks. The space functions as a versatile hybrid of open-air and covered areas, lacking the conventional tiered seating of a theatre or concert hall. Instead, the configuration predominantly comprises flat standing floors across various zones: a main outdoor courtyard, several interconnected industrial sheds offering shelter, and smaller, more intimate indoor rooms.

Capacity at the Junkyard is highly fluid, adapting to event requirements but typically accommodating several hundred to over a thousand patrons. Sightlines in the main open-air sections are generally unobstructed, providing broad views of the performance areas. However, within the covered industrial structures, the presence of supporting pillars and structural elements can introduce localised visual impediments, requiring patrons to navigate for optimal vantage points. Acoustically, the venue presents significant challenges inherent to its design. The prevalence of hard, reflective surfaces – raw concrete walls, metal roofing – within the enclosed areas contributes to considerable reverberation, necessitating precise and powerful sound reinforcement systems to achieve acceptable audio clarity. The open-air environment, while avoiding extreme reflections, is susceptible to ambient noise and requires careful management of the soundstage to project effectively.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entering Junkyard typically involves passing through a clearly defined main gate on Karolinenstraße, leading directly into the complex's diverse activity zones. The experience is characterised by a dynamic atmosphere, particularly during high-attendance club nights and concerts, with dense crowds forming near the primary stages. As there are no traditional tiered balconies, all viewing is from a flat standing position, promoting an immersive and energetic crowd dynamic. Multiple bar stations, often integrated into the industrial framework, are strategically distributed across the site, ensuring accessibility without requiring a return to a single foyer. Crowd heat can be considerable within the more enclosed areas due to low ceilings and high density.
