About Kendal Brewery Arts Centre: Layout, History & Architecture

Kendal Brewery Arts Centre occupies a significant site on Highgate, having been sensitively converted from the town's original brewery complex. Established in 1972, the venue retains much of its industrial Victorian character, with exposed brickwork and robust construction forming the core aesthetic. The main performance area, known as the Theatre, offers a traditional tiered seating arrangement, accommodating approximately 290 patrons. Sightlines in the Theatre are generally unobstructed from most positions, focusing on a proscenium stage. While the acoustics of this converted space are engineered for clarity, they reflect its historical context rather than a purpose-built modern concert hall, meaning sound engineers play a crucial role in achieving optimal fidelity for various performances.

Adjacent to the Theatre, the Warehouse provides a contrasting, more flexible environment. This space can configure for standing events, accommodating up to 450 individuals, or be partially seated for smaller gigs and comedy, typically holding around 150-200. Its industrial aesthetic, with high ceilings and exposed features, contributes to a robust sound profile that benefits significantly from dedicated PA reinforcement. A smaller, more intimate performance space, the Malt Room, further expands the centre's capabilities, typically used for acoustic sets, workshops, and smaller-scale comedic acts, offering a close proximity between performer and audience.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Arrival at Kendal Brewery Arts Centre typically involves entry through the main Highgate entrance, leading into a welcoming foyer area where pre-show drinks are available from dedicated bars. For Theatre performances, the experience is largely seated, ensuring clear views of the stage from the tiered arrangements. In the Warehouse, the atmosphere shifts, particularly for standing gigs, offering a more dynamic and immersive experience where proximity to the stage can be very direct, though sightlines may vary with crowd density. The Malt Room cultivates a distinctly intimate and engaged crowd dynamic. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
