Kraatz, the Musik- und Kongresshalle (MuK) presents a distinct example of postmodern architecture with strong modernist principles. Its prominent white façade, punctuated by geometric forms and expansive glass panels, offers clear views of the Trave River, against which its primary public face is set. The design prioritises functionality and adaptability, a hallmark of its original intent as a multi-purpose venue for both cultural events and large-scale congresses.
The central performance space, the Holstensaal, is engineered for considerable flexibility, accommodating up to 2,000 patrons for seated theatre configurations and approximately 2,500 for standing concerts, depending on the stage setup. This adaptability is achieved through movable seating modules and a flat floor section, allowing for diverse event types. Sightlines within the Holstensaal are generally unimpeded from most tiered seating positions. For standing-room events, proximity to the stage is direct, though lateral views can naturally be affected by crowd density.
