Opened in 1963, Nottingham Playhouse stands as a prominent example of Expressionist Modernism, designed by the celebrated architect Peter Moro. Its distinctive circular drum and fly tower, clad in concrete, create a sculptural presence on Wellington Circus. The main auditorium, seating approximately 750 across tiered stalls and a single circle, is configured in a fan shape, ensuring generally unobstructed sightlines throughout for its primary theatrical purpose. While inherently designed for speech clarity, the hall’s acoustics for musical performances are largely managed and enhanced through its installed sound reinforcement system, providing a controlled sonic environment rather than relying on natural reverberation. The venue also features the smaller Neville Studio, a flexible black-box space with a capacity of around 100, accommodating more intimate and experimental productions.
