About Parque Marítimo Palmetum: Layout, History & Architecture
The Parque Marítimo Palmetum is not a conventional enclosed venue but an extensive 12-hectare botanical garden located directly on the Santa Cruz de Tenerife waterfront. Conceived in 1995 and opened in stages, culminating in its full public access in 2014, the site repurposes a former municipal landfill, transforming it into a unique terraced landscape. The architectural approach here is one of ecological remediation and landscape design, with a series of elevated viewpoints, pathways, and microclimates crafted around a remarkable collection of palms from around the world. The terrain rises gently from the sea, creating natural amphitheatres and varied ground levels.
For live events, the Palmetum offers a distinctive open-air setting. There are no fixed indoor stages or seating configurations; rather, event producers utilize specific terraced areas or open lawns to erect temporary stages, seating, and sound systems. Sightlines are generally unobstructed, though the mature palm trees and undulating topography introduce natural visual elements, which can be integrated into the event's design. Acoustically, as an outdoor space, the performance quality is entirely dependent on the specific sound reinforcement deployed for each event, with the open environment prone to ambient noise from the sea or city.
