About Pla d'en Sala: Layout, History & Architecture
Pla d'en Sala, constructed in 1968, exemplifies the late modernist brutalist movement, its stark concrete façade and uncompromising angles a product of its era's functionalist leanings. Originally conceived as a municipal multi-purpose assembly hall for Santa Maria de Palautordera, a town now incorporated into the wider metropolitan fabric of Greater Manchester, the structure boasts a substantial main auditorium with a configurable capacity. When set for standing events, it accommodates approximately 1,500 patrons, featuring a flat floor that extends from the stage. For seated performances, retractable risers and a fixed, compact balcony provide seating for up to 750.
The internal architecture prioritises utilitarianism over ornate detailing, resulting in a cavernous main space characterised by hard, reflective surfaces. Acoustically, this presents a significant challenge; the inherent natural reverb necessitates a robust and meticulously tuned professional PA system to ensure clarity, especially for amplified music. Sightlines from the main floor are generally unobstructed, offering direct views of the elevated stage. The modest balcony, while providing an elevated perspective, does feature a few structural pillars that can partially impede views for patrons seated at its extreme ends. The design’s emphasis on durability rather than inherent sonic warmth defines the hall's live sound profile.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Entering Pla d'en Sala, patrons are directed through a streamlined ingress system into a spacious, if somewhat unadorned, foyer area. Here, several utilitarian bar stations efficiently serve refreshments, designed for rapid throughput rather than leisurely pre-show mingling. Once inside the main auditorium, the standing pit offers an intimate, high-density experience, with direct proximity to the stage creating an undeniable kinetic energy. Conversely, the tiered balcony provides a more composed viewing environment, with generally clear sightlines allowing for a broader appreciation of stage production, despite the aforementioned minor pillar obstructions. The atmosphere is largely shaped by the performance itself, with the venue's starkness serving as a neutral backdrop. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
