About Royal Northern College of Music: Layout, History & Architecture

Opened in 1973 following the amalgamation of the Royal Manchester College of Music and the Northern School of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music is housed in a distinctive Brutalist structure designed by Building Design Partnership. The complex integrates teaching facilities with several performance spaces. The primary venue is the Concert Hall, featuring tiered, fixed seating for approximately 735 patrons. This hall was specifically engineered for classical and orchestral performances, boasting exceptional natural acoustics that allow for a clear and balanced sound profile without heavy reliance on electronic reinforcement. Sightlines throughout the tiered auditorium are generally unhindered, offering a comprehensive view of the stage from most positions.

Complementing the Concert Hall are the Carole Nash Recital Room and the Studio Theatre. The Recital Room offers a more intimate setting, typically seating around 140 with flexible configurations that can adapt to chamber music, solo recitals, and lectures. The Studio Theatre is a versatile black box space with a capacity of approximately 100, designed for experimental theatre, contemporary music, and smaller-scale productions, allowing for various stage setups from proscenium to in-the-round. Acoustic properties in these smaller spaces are adaptable and designed to support a range of performance styles, often utilising their inherent dry acoustic for clarity in spoken word or amplified events.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Access to the venue is typically via the main entrance on Oxford Road, leading into a spacious, multi-level foyer. Before performances, attendees can utilise the bar facilities situated within the foyer areas, offering standard refreshments in a comfortable setting. Given the predominantly seated nature of the performance spaces, the crowd atmosphere is generally attentive and appreciative, particularly during classical or academic performances. The Concert Hall's tiered design ensures excellent visibility from all seats, avoiding the density issues of standing pits and providing clear sightlines to the stage. With 1 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £285. The next confirmed event on the calendar is An Audience with Devin Townsend on 5th October 2026.
