De Oosterpoort, now operating as SPOT, opened its doors in 1971. Designed by municipal architect G. Nijhuis, the building exemplifies a Modernist architectural style, characterized by its substantial concrete construction and robust, functional forms. This influence is evident in the building’s massing and interior finishes, which prioritize durability and acoustic shaping over ornate detail.

The venue houses multiple performance spaces. The Grote Zaal, the largest auditorium, offers a flexible configuration with tiered seating for approximately 1150 patrons or a standing capacity of up to 1850 when seats are retracted. Sightlines from the tiered sections are generally clear, though the flat standing floor can present typical line-of-sight challenges for those further back in a dense crowd. The Kleine Zaal provides a more intimate setting for around 450 seated or 600 standing, featuring an adaptable floor plan. Acoustics within these concrete environments are inherently lively and rely significantly on sophisticated active sound reinforcement systems to achieve clarity and balance. The inherent reflective qualities of the structural materials mean that natural resonance is managed through engineered dampening rather than relying on inherent warmth.

The space is designed for high-traffic public use, with a straightforward layout focusing on audience flow between the main foyer and the individual halls. The interior surfaces are predominantly concrete and functional materials, contributing to a utilitarian yet effective performance environment that is structurally sound but not acoustically 'pristine' without technological intervention.

Ingress into SPOT / De Oosterpoort is managed efficiently through its main entrance on Trompsingel, leading into a spacious central foyer. Here, multiple well-stocked bars service the audience, designed for rapid throughput before and between performances. For standing events in the Grote Zaal, the pit can achieve considerable density, offering direct proximity to the stage for those at the front. Seated patrons in the tiered sections benefit from elevated sightlines, providing a comprehensive view of the performance without significant obstruction.
