SUBSTAGE Karlsruhe occupies a distinct section within the repurposed historic Alter Schlachthof (Old Slaughterhouse) complex, an ensemble of late 19th-century industrial brick architecture located on Durlacher Allee. Originally part of the sprawling municipal slaughterhouse facilities, the building was reimagined as a prominent live music venue, preserving much of its robust industrial character while adapting its interior for amplified performances. The hall is primarily an expansive, flat standing-room-only space designed to accommodate audiences of up to 1200, fostering a direct and energetic connection between performers and patrons.

The configuration of the main auditorium features a fixed stage at one end, fronted by an open pit area.
