About Teatro Afundación: Layout, History & Architecture
The building now known as Teatro Afundación, originally Teatro García Barbón, was inaugurated in 1927. Designed by architect Antonio Palacios, its exterior presents a prominent Neoclassical style, characterized by grand columns and ornate detailing that reflect the architectural trends of its era. The main auditorium is configured with an orchestra pit, ground-level stalls seating, and two tiered balconies, accommodating approximately 1,200 spectators.
Sightlines from the stalls are generally direct, though views from certain seats on the side balconies may experience partial obstruction due to structural elements. The hall was conceived with acoustics suitable for unamplified dramatic and musical performances, featuring a relatively high ceiling and traditional theatre geometry. For contemporary concerts and amplified events, the space relies significantly on modern sound reinforcement systems to ensure clarity and projection throughout all seating levels. The interior finishes, including wood and plush seating, contribute to sound absorption, preventing excessive reverberation while maintaining an appropriate sonic environment for its varied programming.
