Inaugurated in 1898, Teatro Arriaga in Funchal stands as a refined example of late 19th-century neo-classical design, adapted to the Madeiran landscape. The facade, facing directly onto the harbour, presents a formal arrangement of pilasters and arched windows, crowned by a traditional frieze. Inside, the auditorium is arranged in a classic horseshoe configuration, offering seating across a main stalls level, a dress circle, and an upper gallery, complemented by a series of private boxes flanking the proscenium arch. The hall's total capacity is approximately 750 patrons.

Sightlines are generally good from the central positions of the stalls and the lower dress circle, offering unobstructed views of the stage. However, as is characteristic of theatres from this period, some support pillars for the upper levels can partially obscure views from the extreme sides of the stalls and the rear of the dress circle. The uppermost gallery, while providing an elevated perspective, also contends with a deep overhang, which can limit the full vertical stage visibility for the very last rows.

Acoustically, the space was conceived for natural voice projection and orchestral performance, exhibiting a warm resonance suitable for classical music and spoken word. The ornate plasterwork and timber finishes contribute to a natural reverberation that enhances the depth of sound. However, the inherent design limitations of a late Victorian structure mean that absolute clarity across all frequencies can vary, particularly in the deeper boxes or under the upper gallery overhangs, where sound can sometimes feel less direct. The venue relies on judicious microphone placement for contemporary amplified performances to ensure consistent audibility.
