About The Waterside Theatre: Layout, History & Architecture

Opened in October 2010, The Waterside Theatre presents a contemporary architectural profile, primarily featuring a concrete and glass exterior. The main auditorium is a proscenium arch space designed for a variety of performances, accommodating approximately 1,200 seated patrons across its stalls, lower circle, and upper circle tiers. For amplified concerts, the capacity can expand to 1,800 with a standing pit configuration. Sightlines throughout the tiered seating are generally unobstructed, providing clear views of the stage. A secondary, flexible black box space known as the Norman Field Studio offers a more intimate setting for up to 225, suitable for smaller productions and community events. Acoustically, the main hall benefits from modern design principles, prioritising clarity for spoken word and musicals. For amplified music, the sound profile relies significantly on its integrated PA system, designed to provide coverage and depth across the auditorium.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entry to the venue leads into a bright, spacious foyer spread across multiple levels, which also houses several bars for pre-show and interval refreshments. Depending on the event, the main auditorium transforms from a fully seated experience, where tiered balconies offer excellent visual perspectives, to a partial standing arrangement for amplified music. In standing configurations, proximity to the stage is direct, leading to a denser crowd atmosphere. The venue's modern facilities ensure smooth ingress and egress for patrons. With 4 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £39.98. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Marillion on 21st September 2026.
