About theaterhagen: Layout, History & Architecture
Built in 1972, "theaterhagen" exemplifies the Brutalist architectural movement, characterized by its exposed reinforced concrete structure and stark, geometric forms. The facility was conceived as a multi-purpose cultural hub during a period of urban renewal in Hagen.
The main auditorium accommodates an audience of 1,800 across a flat standing floor and a single, cantilevered tiered balcony. Sightlines from the standing area are generally unimpeded, though those further back under the balcony overhang may experience a reduced vertical perspective. The balcony offers clear views of the stage, with raked seating ensuring visual access over rows.
Acoustically, the concrete construction of the hall presents significant challenges, leading to a naturally resonant, sometimes cavernous sound profile. Extensive reliance on modern sound reinforcement systems is necessary to deliver intelligible audio across the wide, deep space.
