About Uebel & Gefährlich: Layout, History & Architecture
Housed within one of Hamburg's imposing, monolithic WWII Flakbunkers, "Uebel & Gefährlich" occupies the upper floors of the structure at Feldstraße 66. Built in 1942, the venue embodies a stark brutalist aesthetic, its concrete walls and low ceilings defining a raw, industrial character. The primary performance space, often referred to as the Turmzimmer (Tower Room), is a predominantly flat standing-floor area, allowing for an intimate, high-density crowd experience. While there are no tiered balconies, raised sections and platforms near the stage or bars offer varied vantage points, though sightlines in a packed room can still be dictated by crowd movement.
The inherent reflectivity of the concrete structure dictates a heavy reliance on sophisticated PA systems and strategic acoustic treatment. Sound in the main hall is typically direct and punchy, designed to fill the robust space with force. However, like many repurposed concrete venues, without meticulous sound engineering, the acoustics can lean towards resonance, potentially becoming a dense, powerful wash rather than offering intricate clarity across all frequencies. The design prioritises a high-energy club atmosphere, where raw sonic impact is often key. Ancillary spaces, including the smaller Frachtraum (Cargo Hold) and Dachgarten (Rooftop Garden), offer different scales and atmospheric variations, with the rooftop providing an open-air contrast to the bunker's interior.
