The Winter Garden in Eastbourne, part of the extensive Devonshire Park complex, first opened its doors in 1875, with construction completed by 1877. Designed by Henry Currey, the architectural style exhibits clear Italianate and French Renaissance influences, characteristic of Victorian civic structures built for public entertainment and assembly. The venue comprises two primary performance spaces: the elegant Concert Hall and the versatile Floral Hall. The Concert Hall, the larger of the two, features a proscenium arch stage, with tiered seating ascending from an adaptable flat floor area. This configuration allows for both fully seated events and standing concerts, offering varying perspectives of the performance. Capacity in the Concert Hall can range from approximately 600 seated to 1000 standing, depending on the event setup.

Adjacent to the Concert Hall, the Floral Hall offers a more flexible, open-plan space, often configured with a flat floor suitable for banquets, exhibitions, and smaller performances, accommodating around 300 seated or 500 standing. Sightlines within the Concert Hall are generally robust from the tiered sections, though occasional structural elements inherent to Victorian design might present minor, localised obstructions at the far edges of the auditorium. Acoustically, the hall was conceived for the natural amplification of classical music and spoken word. Its high ceilings and ornate plasterwork contribute to a lively, resonant sound profile. For contemporary amplified music, this necessitates careful tuning of modern PA systems to manage natural reverberation and ensure vocal clarity, rather than providing an anechoic studio environment.
