About Aviva Studios - Warehouse: Layout, History & Architecture
Aviva Studios, designed by OMA's Ellen van Loon, opened its doors in 2023, establishing itself as a significant purpose-built arts venue in Manchester. The Warehouse, a primary performance space within the complex, embodies a raw, industrial-modernist architectural style, featuring vast, unadorned concrete surfaces and exposed structural elements. This highly adaptable hall offers immense flexibility, capable of accommodating up to 5,000 standing attendees or being reconfigured with tiered seating for around 1,600, depending on the production requirements. Its design prioritises scale and versatility over inherent acoustic warmth.
The sheer volume and hard material palette of the space mean that natural acoustic characteristics lean towards a broad, resonant sound rather than intimate clarity. Live performances here rely heavily on sophisticated, well-tuned PA systems to manage reverberation and deliver focused audio. Sightlines are generally expansive across the vast, often flat floor, though a standing crowd's density can impact individual views towards the stage. There are no fixed architectural obstructions, allowing for unobstructed views from various vantage points once the stage layout is set.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Entering Aviva Studios, guests typically pass through the expansive foyer areas before reaching the Warehouse. These zones are equipped with multiple bars and concession points, often bustling before events and during intermissions. Within the Warehouse itself, the atmosphere can range from an intense, high-density standing pit for large-scale concerts to a more composed experience when configured with seating. The industrial aesthetic and the scale of the hall contribute to a unique, often exhilarating, sense of occasion for live events. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.
