Bürgerhaus Stollwerck occupies the former premises of the Stollwerck chocolate factory, a significant industrial structure in Cologne's Südstadt district. Following a comprehensive conversion and renovation, the hall opened its doors in 1987, repurposing its robust industrial shell into a multi-functional community and cultural center. The architecture reflects its origins; a functional, unadorned modernist approach characterizes the main performance space, featuring high ceilings and exposed structural elements.
The primary auditorium, known simply as 'Saal', is configured for a standing capacity typically ranging from 800 to 1,000 patrons for live music events. It offers a largely flat floor leading directly to a raised stage, which, while providing immediate proximity to performers, means sightlines for shorter attendees can be compromised towards the rear or sides of the room.
