The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, primarily an outdoor motorsport venue, saw its first competitive race in 1922, though elements of its public road course origins date back to 1920-21. The current permanent circuit layout, which eliminated public road sections, was inaugurated in 1979 and has undergone numerous safety and infrastructure modernisations since, including significant reconfigurations in 2007 and 2022. Architecturally, the circuit comprises a functional, purpose-built infrastructure of concrete and steel grandstands, pit buildings, media centres, and hospitality suites. These structures are designed for durability, spectator visibility, and the demanding logistics of international motorsport events, eschewing decorative flourishes for utilitarian efficiency.

With a sprawling footprint, the facility offers extensive general admission areas, often on natural grassy banks and hillsides, supplemented by numerous tiered grandstands – such as those at La Source, Raidillon, F1, and Bruxelles – providing dedicated seating for tens of thousands. The total capacity for major events can exceed 200,000 spectators. Sightlines from the grandstands are generally excellent, meticulously engineered to offer clear views of key track sections.
