Kulturzentrum Schlachthof e.V. occupies the former municipal slaughterhouse building in Eupen, an industrial structure originally constructed in 1904. After decades of commercial operation, the complex was meticulously repurposed and inaugurated as a cultural centre in 1989. Its architecture retains the robust, utilitarian character of early 20th-century industrial design, featuring prominent red brickwork and high ceilings throughout.
The primary performance space, known as the Große Halle (Great Hall), is configured as a large, flat standing floor with an approximate capacity of 800 attendees for live music events, reducing to around 300-400 for seated arrangements. The inherent acoustic properties of such a high-ceilinged, brick-lined industrial space mean that the hall is acoustically live, often leading to a pronounced reverberation. While this can provide an energetic atmosphere, the venue relies heavily on its installed public address system to achieve clarity and directness for amplified performances. Sightlines across the flat floor are generally unobstructed, though they can become challenging for those towards the rear in densely packed crowds, particularly for events with lower stage heights.
