Opened in 2003, Estádio da Luz was constructed to host UEFA Euro 2004, replacing the original stadium of the same name. Designed by HOK Sport (now Populous), the architecture is a distinct modernist bowl, characterized by its steel and concrete structure and a translucent polycarbonate roof that permits natural light. With a football capacity of 64,642, the arena transforms for live events, utilizing the central pitch for standing audiences or additional temporary seating, encircled by multiple tiers of permanent spectator stands.

The layout ensures generally unobstructed sightlines from the permanent tiered seating, although upper reaches can feel considerably distant from a central stage setup. From the pitch, proximity to the stage dictates the view. Acoustically, the vast, open-air nature of the space, coupled with its predominantly hard surfaces of concrete and steel, presents inherent challenges for musical performances. The arena relies heavily on meticulously engineered PA systems to project sound; expect a large, expansive sound profile with considerable natural reverberation and a potential for echo, rather than the focused intimacy of a purpose-built concert hall.
