About Kafe Antzokia: Layout, History & Architecture
The space occupies the former Church of San Vicente Mártir, a striking example of early 20th-century Neo-Basque architecture completed around 1914. Converted into a cultural venue in 1995, the original religious edifice has been sensitively adapted. The main auditorium, once the church's nave, offers a largely flat standing floor configured with a stage at one end, accommodating up to 600 patrons for live performances. A perimeter balcony encircles the upper level, providing elevated sightlines for seated guests, though views can be distant from the rear.
Architecturally, the hall retains its distinctive high vaulted ceilings and original stained-glass window framework, creating a visually impressive but acoustically lively environment. While modern sound reinforcement systems are crucial and extensively deployed to manage the inherent natural reverberation of the cavernous space, this natural decay offers a unique sonic character that bands often leverage. The absence of traditional theatre raking on the ground floor means direct stage visibility in the standing area is best near the front, with density increasing further back.
