About Leas Cliff Hall: Layout, History & Architecture
The current Leas Cliff Hall, situated prominently on Folkestone's clifftop Leas, officially opened in 1927, designed by J.J. Joass. Its architecture blends Neo-Georgian formality with understated Art Deco flourishes, reflecting the era's sophisticated aesthetic. While a building existed on the site prior, the current structure was a significant redevelopment after a fire. The main auditorium, seating approximately 928 patrons across its stalls, dress circle, and upper circle, retains many original features including its proscenium arch details and decorative plasterwork.
The internal layout features a traditional theatre configuration with clearly defined tiered seating areas. Sightlines from the stalls are generally good, though patrons in the far sides of the upper circle may experience minor obstructions from architectural elements or overhangs, typical of venues of this age. For standing-only events, the stalls area is cleared to create an open floor, significantly increasing the capacity to around 1,500 and offering close proximity to the stage.
Acoustically, the hall was designed for variety performances, drama, and light orchestral music, possessing a natural warmth suited to unamplified voice and instrumentation. For contemporary amplified music concerts, the sound relies heavily on modern public address systems, which are essential for clarity and impact, compensating for the inherent reverberation characteristic of its large, high-ceilinged space.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Ingress to the hall is typically via the main entrance on The Leas, leading into a series of interconnected foyer spaces and bars that provide amenities before and during performances. Crowd atmosphere varies significantly with the event type; seated comedy or theatre shows foster a more subdued, appreciative environment, while standing music gigs can generate a dense, energetic pit directly in front of the stage. Balcony seating consistently offers elevated views, albeit at a greater distance from the action. With 2 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from £45. The next confirmed event on the calendar is Leo Sayer on 13th October 2026.
