Opened in 1991, Ministry of Sound occupies a former bus garage in Elephant and Castle, South London. The architectural approach is one of industrial conversion, repurposing the robust concrete and steel structure into a multi-room electronic music venue. The main space, known as "The Box," is a large, square chamber with a flat standing floor and a relatively low ceiling, designed to maximize acoustic intensity rather than traditional architectural grandeur. There are no tiered balconies or fixed seating; the focus is entirely on a communal dance experience.

Complementing The Box are several smaller rooms, including 103, The Baby Box, The Loft, and The Bar, each offering a distinct atmosphere and often featuring different DJs or music styles. These spaces maintain the venue's industrial aesthetic with exposed elements and functional design. Acoustic performance is central to the hall's design, particularly in The Box, which features a meticulously engineered sound system (often Martin Audio or Function-One) optimized for high sound pressure levels and deep bass frequencies characteristic of electronic music. While the concrete shell could inherently lead to a cavernous sound, extensive acoustic treatment and a custom-tuned system deliver a powerful, immersive audio experience tailored specifically for its genre, rather than a neutral or "pristine" acoustic environment. The overall capacity across all rooms is approximately 1,600.

Once inside, multiple bar areas provide refreshments, strategically placed to serve the various rooms without creating bottlenecking.
