About Novello Theatre: Layout, History & Architecture
Constructed in 1905, the building now known as the Novello Theatre initially opened as the Waldorf Theatre, designed by architect W.G.R. Sprague. The architectural style is characteristic of the Edwardian era, with an exterior blending red brick and Portland stone, and an interior featuring refined Baroque Revival and Rococo decorative elements. The auditorium is arranged across four tiers: Stalls at ground level, followed by the Dress Circle, Upper Circle, and Balcony. This traditional stacked configuration provides seating for approximately 1050 patrons. While the design generally offers good sightlines towards the proscenium stage, some seats in the upper circles, particularly those further to the sides or behind structural pillars, may experience partial obstructions.
The hall's acoustic profile is well-suited to its primary function as a musical theatre and dramatic performance venue. Its volume and materials allow for clear projection of dialogue and amplified vocal performances, which are typical for West End musicals. The tiered layout naturally assists in distributing sound evenly throughout the space, though the natural reverb time is moderate, preventing excessive muddiness in heavily amplified productions. Bus & Local Transit
Numerous bus routes serve the Aldwych area. Key stops include "Aldwych / Drury Lane" (Stop D, E, H, P, Q), which are directly adjacent to or within a 1-minute walk of the theatre. Routes 6, 11, 13, 23, 87, 91, 139, and 172 are among those that stop on Aldwych or nearby Strand/Kingsway. National Express coaches to Victoria Coach Station provide wider connectivity, with onward Underground or bus connections to Aldwych.
Parking & Vehicle Access
