Opened in 1971 as 'Paard van Troje', PAARD stands as a prominent example of post-war Dutch functionalist architecture, built to accommodate amplified music performances. The building’s core structure reflects the era's preference for concrete and utilitarian design, prioritising practical layout over ornamental flourish. Its main performance space, the Grote Zaal, boasts a substantial standing floor capacity, complemented by an encircling, elevated balcony. Sightlines from the standing area directly in front of the stage are generally unobstructed, though views from the outer edges or the rear of the main floor can be partially obscured by the crowd density during sold-out events. The balcony offers a clearer, albeit more distant, vantage point.

Acoustically, the Grote Zaal's concrete construction, while durable, necessitates a meticulously tuned and powerful sound reinforcement system. Without such, the natural reverberation characteristics of the space could prove challenging. The venue's technical team consistently deploys a robust PA to deliver clarity and impact across the auditorium. Adjacent to the main hall, the Kleine Zaal provides a more intimate setting. This smaller room features a lower ceiling and a direct, unadorned stage-to-audience configuration, offering a different, more visceral acoustic experience where crowd heat and direct sound pressure are more pronounced.
