Stadion Feijenoord, colloquially known as De Kuip ("The Tub"), was completed in 1937 and is a significant example of early Dutch functionalist architecture. Designed by Brinkman & Van der Vlugt, the stadium's original structure made extensive use of glass and steel, pioneering a modern, open design that offered unobstructed views. Renovations and expansions over the decades, particularly in the 1990s, have largely retained its iconic double-deck bowl configuration, though concrete has become a more dominant material in its construction. For live music events, the pitch typically converts into a standing area, augmenting the tiered seating. The vast, largely unmodulated concrete bowl design inherently lacks the reflective surfaces or intimate dimensions required for natural sonic clarity. Sound for concerts is therefore almost entirely dependent on extensive, precisely calibrated distributed PA systems. While the stadium’s enclosed shape allows for significant crowd noise amplification, creating an intense atmosphere during sporting events, for musical performances, this translates to a cavernous soundscape where engineers must work diligently to mitigate echo and maintain intelligibility across its considerable capacity.
