About Shaftesbury Theatre: Layout, History & Architecture
Constructed in 1911 as the New Prince's Theatre and later renamed Shaftesbury Theatre in 1962, this Edwardian Baroque structure was designed by Bertie Crewe. The auditorium accommodates approximately 1,400 patrons across three distinct tiers: the Stalls, the Dress Circle, and the Upper Circle. Seating is fixed, offering a traditional theatrical experience focused on musicals and dramatic productions. While the design ensures good visibility from most seats, patrons in the far reaches of the Upper Circle or at the extreme sides of the lower tiers may encounter slight sightline limitations from architectural features or balcony overhangs, typical of theatres of its era.
