About Sondheim Theatre: Layout, History & Architecture
Originally opening as the Queen's Theatre in 1907, the venue was designed by the prolific theatre architect W.G.R. Sprague in an Edwardian Baroque style. Following extensive refurbishment and renaming in 2019, it now honours the legacy of Stephen Sondheim. The auditorium maintains a classic West End configuration across four tiers: Stalls, Dress Circle, Upper Circle, and Balcony, accommodating approximately 1,069 patrons. Seating is typically well-raked, particularly in the upper circles, to provide clear sightlines, though some seats towards the extreme sides of the Balcony may experience slight peripheral obstructions typical of historic playhouses.
