Tolhuistuin, situated on the north bank of the IJ river, began its life in the 1950s as the utilitarian canteen and social hub for Shell's research campus. This modernist structure, characterised by its functional design, concrete elements, and expansive windows, served the multinational's employees for decades before undergoing a significant transformation in the early 2010s. Reopened in 2012 as a vibrant cultural centre, it now seamlessly blends its industrial heritage with contemporary artistic purpose, maintaining much of its original architectural integrity.
The venue encompasses multiple distinct spaces, with the primary performance areas being the Tuinzaal and Zaal 1. The Tuinzaal, the larger of the two, typically accommodates around 450 standing patrons, offering a wide, flat floor configuration that ensures relatively unobstructed sightlines from most positions.
