About Ultra Warehouse: Layout, History & Architecture

Ultra Warehouse, originally constructed in 1928 as a fabrication plant for industrial machinery, now serves as Derby's premier large-capacity music venue. Its architectural lineage is firmly rooted in early 20th-century industrial pragmatism, characterised by its robust red-brick exterior, extensive steel-frame windows that once provided natural light for manufacturing, and a distinctive sawtooth roofline. Following a comprehensive conversion completed in 2019, the space maintains its raw, utilitarian aesthetic, with exposed concrete floors, original support pillars strategically placed throughout the main floor, and a towering ceiling reaching 15 meters at its apex.

The venue boasts a maximum standing capacity of 2,000, configured predominantly as a vast, unobstructed ground-level floor, ensuring direct access and proximity to the elevated main stage. While the flat floor plan offers an immersive, high-energy experience, sightlines for those further back or positioned behind one of the structural pillars can become partially restricted, particularly for acts utilising intricate stage design at lower heights. Acoustically, the inherent nature of a cavernous, hard-surfaced industrial building presents significant challenges. The space relies heavily on a state-of-the-art, custom-designed line array sound system and extensive acoustic panelling installed post-conversion to mitigate the natural reverberation and potential for boominess, striving for clarity within its naturally expansive envelope.

The Live Experience & Current Schedule

Entering Ultra Warehouse typically involves navigating well-organised queues outside the building's primary entrance on Chequers Road, leading directly into a spacious, if somewhat stark, antechamber designed for efficient ingress and security checks. Beyond this point, patrons disperse into the main hall, where two substantial bar areas are located on opposing flanks of the standing pit, offering standard refreshments and a selection of local craft beers. The atmosphere within the standing pit is generally dynamic and dense, particularly for sold-out electronic music or rock performances, fostering a direct and energetic connection with the artists onstage. With 0 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from standard pricing. The next confirmed event on the calendar is upcoming live performances on soon.

Travel & Arrival Logistics

🚆

Rail & Mainline Connections

Derby railway station, a mainline hub, is approximately a 20-minute walk from Ultra Warehouse. Upon exiting the station, head north-west on Railway Terrace, then turn right onto Midland Road. Continue as it transitions into Roundhouse Road, then make a final right turn onto Chequers Road, where the venue is located.

🚌

Bus & Local Transit

The nearest bus stops are situated directly on Chequers Road, served by Arriva Derby routes 2, 2A, 2B, and 2C from Derby Bus Station (Morledge) in the city centre. These services provide regular connections throughout the day and into the late evening.

🚗

Parking & Vehicle Access

Limited on-street parking is available in the immediate vicinity, but attendees are advised to utilise the larger, more secure car parks within a 10-minute walk. Options include the Wyvern Retail Park car park (DE21 6SY) and the Derby Arena car park (DE24 8UX), both of which offer ample spaces, though fees apply and advance booking is recommended for busy event nights to avoid congestion.

🚶

Entry, Queues & Security

The main entrance is clearly signposted on the western side of the building, facing Chequers Road. External queuing systems are typically in place and are largely unsheltered, so preparedness for local weather conditions is advised. Standard security procedures, including bag searches, are conducted upon entry. Arriving 30-45 minutes before the advertised door time is recommended for popular events to ensure a smooth and timely admission.
